Day 5

It’s still happening! We are having more fun! Each day is more fun than the last and it’s not going to stop until we all go home! We went to a super awesome oyster lab. It was such an eye opener. Here are a bunch of pictures.

Day 4

Today we left Tilgman Island. The weather was absolutely gorgeous! While on the boat, we dredged for oysters and trawled for fish. We did get a few oysters and did a super cool anatomy lesson about them. We learned how to drop anchor and then got to swim in the Bay, off the boat (everyone had a life jacket on the entire time, so don't worry parents, we were very safe :)). Once at camp, we set up our tents, ate supper, and did a super cool dissection of tiny squid (pictured below). It was a day chalk full of anatomy and fun!

Day 3

Hello! We are still having a wonderful time on our expedition of the Chesapeake Bay! We had loads of fun learning about different components of water (salinity, alcolinity, PH, etc.). The most exciting part was passing over the deepest part of the bay, recorded a new record of 193 ft., and paying a penny to the bay for a safe passage. We docked around 1pm and made our way to a museum and an environmental center; we even got to pet a few horseshoe crabs (pictured below).

The Start of the Journey

Oh! My! Goodness! Y’all! We are having so much fun!!! Where do I begin?! I suppose I’ll start from the beginning. We woke up Monday morning bright eyed and full of energy. Then we ate a nutritious breakfast (eggs, sausage, and hash browns), packed our bags, and left campus to get to our boat. Once at the docks, we met our amazing, professional sailing crew and set sail for the first day of our 9 day adventure. It was a day of many firsts for just about everyone, and they took each novel experience with stride. For example, furling and tucking the main sail (pictured below). We ended they day with a trip to the beach, supper, and camp setup. Day 2 We got to sleep in till 4:30am. It was fantastic! Why did we get up at 4:30am, you ask yourself. Because we went crabbing, and that is when they eat. It was a blast! We caught around a bushel of crabs. The coolest part was getting to eat them after another boat ride and another trip to the beach! Better still, we are ending our night with a campfire and s’mores!

And away they go!

The CBay students were picked up by the LCF staff this morning and after saying a sad goodbye to their phones they loaded their gear and themselves into the vans for the trip down to Sigsbee.  After doing some shuffling of luggage the campers boarded the boat, got their life jackets, had some introductions to life aboard and got under way.  Campers are here to help so right away they were handling dock lines, fenders and starting to hear about what it takes to raise the sail.  Today will be filled with lots of orientations to sailing, camping and life on the Bay.

Welcome summer 2018!!

Yesterday may have marked the official start to summer, but the Sigsbee crew has been hard at work preparing for CTY for the past several weeks.  Lesson planning, gear packing, boat maintenance, meal planning, health form reading and RA trainings are just a few of the things we've packed into the past 2 weeks.  Whew, it's been busy!  We're excited to meet students and their families at the Open House on Sunday 12-2pm.

The Sigsbee crew practiced MANY saftey drills this week including deploying the life raft.

Sigsbee's First Mate, Peter, teaches the Chesapeake Bay RAs some important knots.
