Day 2, July 1st

This morning half of the students woke up at 4:30 in the morning to go crabbing.  Even though it was early, the kids were excited.  At 5 we met the illustrious Captain Clay who took us out to lay trot lines to catch crabs.  The first group checked the trot lines for two hours and even managed to catch a few Blue Crabs.  The second group arrived just as the first group was coming into the dock, and they got to enjoy a few hours of crabbing and talking to Captain Clay.  After both groups had gotten to try crabbing it was time to get back on the Sigsbee.

Out on the bay the wind had really picked up so we knew we were in for a good time.  After hauling the sail up and eating lunch the students were ready to split into groups and learn.  One group learned how to navigate a boat from first mate Rohan and the other group learned about oysters from Katie.  With both sails up the boat really picked up speed, and we got a little wet as we tacked back and forth across the bay.

After docking and setting up camp the students got a delicious surprise. Joe had taken the crabs they caught and had them steamed.  Captain Joe came to camp and led everyone through dissecting and eating a crab.  Everyone stuffed themselves with crab and prepared to bed down for the night.
