Cheese Ball Saturday, July 7, 2012

So far we have been having a lot of fun. We have camped outside once and slept inside twice. It is really cool to learn about all the knots and coils on the boat and many of us even got to sail the ship. The days are tiring and hot, but extremely rewarding. We have been to two Marine Museums and a few islands. We have been taking water quality tests, trawling, docking the ship, and swimming in the water. We have also learned how to pitch a tent and we are having fun preparing meals and cleaning up afterwards.

We used a trawl net to catch stinging sea nettles and comb jellies. Then we got to eat the comb jellies! The comb jellies tasted like salty unflavored jello. Also, so glad we got to sleep in air-conditioning the past two nights! It felt so much better than sleeping in a tent over the first night! Can’t wait to do more fun stuff…

The group has made our way through the bay in the hot sun. The Sigsbee, our boat, is small but comforting. While on the boat, we learned how to raise the main sail and jib, as well as use trawl nets and water quality tests. I for one can tie many knots and have learned the basics of a seaman’s life.

We have slept inside for the past 2 nights and the air conditioning felt really good. We also used a trawl net to catch fish but we never caught any fish. The first time we caught a lot of sea nettles and a blue crab. We also saw a few pelicans and that is very rare. We were able to learn how to navigate and how to test the water quality of the bay.

We’ve been able to sleep inside the past couple of nights because it’s been so hot, which is nice. Last night we slept in this loft place which was super hot, but better than the buggy outdoors. I think we’re getting a little spoiled, but I like it. We ate out and got pizza last night, which was yummy, but I like preparing the dinner more, just not the cleanup afterward. Everyone here is fun, but people are getting eaten alive by mosquitoes…

Last night, we were surprised by a big feast at Jerry’s as which I stuffed myself with pizza and cookies. We also were able to sleep inside in a room which was very hot but still better than the tents. This morning, we were able to sleep in until 7:00, which was awesome! Hopefully we get a shower in the next couple of days because I haven’t felt clean in a while.
