Funday Sunday July 8, 2012

Today we went trawling again and this time we got really lucky because we caught a lot of both fish and crabs. We also caught a peeler crab which is a soft shelled crab. When I touched the peeler crab, it felt really soft and fragile.

We went trawling (fishing) again today. We caught many sea nettles, 7 crabs, a hog choker, 9 spots, and two unknown fish. One of the crabs we caught was a soft-shell, which means it was newly molted. We touched its shell and it was squishy and rough, while it is normally hard and smooth. We also felt the hog choker and it was smooth if you felt it from one way while it was rough the other way. We learned the reason the hog choker is called a hog choker is because if they get eaten by hogs (or anything) the wrong way, the hog will choke.

Today we trawled again and we caught a lot of sea nettles and 6 crabs and spot fish. We watched them swim around. We also made boats to see how much weight they could hold. I am having a lot of fun on the boat.

Today we trawled for fish for the 4th time this trip. We were very successful on catching fish, crabs and a lot of jellyfish. There was a huge ball of them so we had to use rope to pull all of it up onto the ship. There were very interesting, especially the one that was eating the fish. I never knew a jellyfish can eat a fish that is about 3-4 inches big.

I have learned that Slaughter Creek has its name because pirates used to chill out here. The water is mostly still, there is a little breeze, and I feel like it’s the coolest it has ever been on the Sigsbee so far… There is supposed to be a storm later today so we had to wake up and get on the boat earlier today. We are now south of Benony Point at 11:45 and we just trawled on the starboard side of the boat…In the net, there is a huge HUGE ball of jelly fish. We dumped it into a big tub and Ronnie tried to get out all of the fish/crabs stuck in there before they were stung to death. There are at least 100 jelly fish in the tub. Most of them are sea nettles. One of the jellyfish had a whole fish inside of it. During the trawling, I guess he found a treat. We separated fish and crabs from the jelly fish. We caught 7 blue crabs, one hog choker, and 9 spot fish. The crabs were about 2-5 inches long. The hog choker was about 3 inches, and the spot fish were all about 4 inches long. Now it is very hot and there is no breeze.

Day 5, past the halfway point. So many things we’ve done and so many things left. I can’t wait for tomorrow but I can. I love being on the water and learning and remembering. Working, having a purpose. I love it all.
