Day 6, July 13

This morning, we ate a fantastic breakfast at our camp, which was situated in the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. Then we walked to the college's Horn Point Laboratory to tour the oyster hatchery. This world class facility helps to restore oyster reefs and oyster populations in the Chesapeake Bay. CTY has been instrumental to this restoration effort. We saw the green room where phytoplankton (food for the oysters) are grown. We saw the oyster tanks and also toured the sturgeon tanks. Then the real work began. We filled up bags with oyster shells that would eventually make their way to the bay to form reefs. To spice things up, we had a competition between the starboard and port watches to see who could fill up the bags faster. Amazingly, it was a tie and together we created a new record time of 18 minutes 35 seconds! After lunch we went to clean the oyster tanks. Then we finally got to shower! Amazing. Then we had an outstanding barbecue dinner. Then we played basketball. Day 6 was legendary.
